The team is evaluating a variety of breakout projects that could independently provide benefits before the completion of the long-term congestion solution on I-84. These could include:
Flex Lane
Successfully implemented by several other states, a Flex Lane allows the inside median shoulder to be used as a travel lane during the busiest times such as weekday morning and afternoon rush hours in the direction where traffic is heaviest. By making better use of the existing I-84 footprint, the Flex Lane would create a more reliable and efficient experience for everyone. Interchange 8 Improvements
This potential project introduces a Diverging Diamond interchange to improve circulation and traffic operations from Newtown Road to I-84 and I-84 to Route 6. This includes the relocation of the I-84 East on-ramp.

Main St / Downs St / North St Intersection
Just outside of downtown, this potential project seeks to improve sight lines, reduce congestion, and improve traffic operations and safety at the Main St/Downs St/ North St intersection.

Transit
Potential regional transit service with express bus routes connecting downtown Danbury with train stations (Brewster and Norwalk) and other town centers. A local circulator shuttle is also being evaluated to link the express service with existing HART stops.

What Mill Plain Road and other streets could look like with protected bike lanes.
Pedestrian and Bicycle
Pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Mill Plain Road and other streets could repurpose the existing roadway for enhancing non-motorized travel by creating protected bike lanes, side paths, and / or separated facilities.
