Concept Development

With public and stakeholder input, a total of 26 concepts were developed to address issues in either the mainline, west, center, or east segments. All concepts were developed to improve one or several inefficiencies associated with increased congestion and poor mobility.

Mainline concepts target improvements across the entire study area from exploring the addition of a lane in each direction to correcting left-hand on- and off-ramps with more typical right-hand on- and off-ramps.

In the west segment, improvements are intended to reduce congestion and address weaving for travelers passing through I-84, travelers accessing Route 7, and travelers navigating to local roads between Interchanges 3 and 4.

The center segment, which traverses the downtown Danbury area and includes Interchanges 5 and 6. This section of I-84 is characterized by high traffic volumes and incomplete interchanges, with many local travelers using the highway for in-town trips. Both access to downtown and highway access are the focus of many of these concepts.

The east segment, which includes Interchanges 7 and 8. Improvements are focused on access to and from Route 7 at Interchange 7, and the commercial district near Interchange 8.
